CHARLOTTE

I couldn’t believe the words had come out of my mouth the way they had. Talk about diving into the deep end.

“Sorry,” I said right after, though I wasn’t. “Wait. No, I’m not.” I adjusted in my seat while London tried to form some words.

“Listen,” I started. “We haven’t known each other very long, so it’s not like I thought I’d mean the world to you, but I thought we were friends. Or becoming friends and after…” My cheeks heated at the thought of mentioning what he’d done. “Last night, I thought… I guess I don’t know what I thought, but I really didn’t expect to hear you say that I don’t mean shit to you. Was I wrong about all this?”

“No,” he finally said. “You weren’t wrong.” He took a drink of his coffee before continuing, as if that was the liquid courage he’d needed, though there was no alcohol in it. “I’m sorry, Charlotte. I never should’ve said that. I’ll explain, but know that I’m not trying to make excuses.”

I nodded so he’d know that I heard him, but this was the first time I’d seen London look uncomfortable. Admittedly, I hadn’t known him long, but he dripped with confidence in everything I’d seen him do.

“Lilah insinuated that I have feelings for you and should act on them.” His brown eyes glanced to my lips then back. “But I don’t do feelings. I fuck. There’s no easy way to say that.”

“I’m not that delicate, London.”

“OK. It’s just sometimes women—never mind. Anyway, I don’t do feelings and I don’t do relationships, as I told you.”

“Yes. You were very honest about that.”

“Well, when Lilah said it, the asshole in me kicked in and I was saying all of that to her. It wasn’t really about you.”

“But it was about me. That much was clear.” Much clearer than his explanation.

“Yeah.” He ran a hand through his hair and paused for the waitress to set our order on the table. Though my stomach hated the idea of eating, it would give me something to do. “I’m sorry about that.”

“You’ve already said that.”

“I know.” He took a big bite of his sandwich, so I picked my ham and cheese up to take one too. A smaller one. “Anyway, I was trying to make sure she’d never say it again because…”

“Because?” I raised an eyebrow.

“Because I don’t do relationships and don’t want anyone thinking otherwise. People get hurt that way.”

It was clear to me that he wasn’t going to tell me why he was the way he was and it wouldn’t be right for me to pry. Clearly, something or someone had hurt him in the past. In a way that was going to take him time to heal from, if he ever did. It wasn’t my place to try to push him or change him. That had never been my intention.

My intention had been to have some fun. Do something for me. Not live the life my parents had planned for me.

“Well, there’s good news, London.
